The Essentials Program

Government funding does not provide assistance to low income women to purchase or obtain personal care products (think toilet paper, shampoo, soap, tampons, pads). The majority of women who turn to Ulster County’s People’s Place for assistance cannot get personal/feminine hygiene items because they are in high demand, but the supply is often low (not regularly available due to inconsistent donations). Last year, there were approximately 1,000 families per month who were eligible to select an item from People’s Place “Personal Care Closet.” Although the majority of families chose toilet paper when it was available, the personal care shelves are often empty and these women leave empty handed.

This program, sponsored by Hale Advisors in cooperation with People’s Place, will provide qualifying women with essential items for personal hygiene and well-being via People’s Place. The pilot program began April 4, with the first 250 bags delivered to People’s Place. The bags contain a full-size shampoo, full-size body wash, deodorant, a razor and a choice of maxi-pads or tampons. The cost is approximately $5-$7 for each bag. All items are purchased via People’s Place’s tax-exempt status. We are supplying the money and women-power to kick off this pilot and will be reaching out to larger business community to find additional partners to participate in the initiative.

The mission of People’s Place, a thrift store and food pantry located in Kingston, NY, is to feed, clothe and respond to the essential needs of the people in Ulster County with kindness, compassion and the preservation of human dignity. Visit for more information.
